Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park: History & Visitor Guide

Perched atop a 750-foot natural limestone peak in Sandy Point Parish along the northwestern coast of St. Kitts, Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is an exceptionally preserved historical fortification.

Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, the fortress was recognized as an outstanding example of 17th- and 18th-century British military architecture in the Caribbean. The complex is historically significant as a testament to British military engineering and the craftsmanship and forced labor of enslaved African stonemasons and laborers who built the fortifications.

The national park is administered and preserved by the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society, an independent non-profit organization established in 1965.

Historical Background & Architecture

Fortification of the hill began in 1690, when British forces placed cannon upon its heights. Over the course of the 18th century, the site was expanded into an extensive polygonal fortress complex centered around the elevated Fort George Citadel.

The structures were constructed atop the 750-foot limestone hill adapting military fortification designs to the natural Caribbean topography. The masonry walls were erected through the skilled craftsmanship and forced labor of enslaved African stonemasons and builders.
