St. Kitts Scenic Railway: History, Train Tour & Booking Guide

The St. Kitts Scenic Railway—colloquially known as the “Sugar Train”—offers visitors an opportunity to experience Kittitian agricultural history, coastal engineering, and island culture.

Running along a route originally constructed in the early 20th century, the excursion carries passengers on a 30-mile island circle: 18 miles aboard narrow-gauge trains and 12 miles on connecting sightseeing coaches.

Industrial Origins of the Railway

Sugar cane cultivation served as the backbone of the Kittitian economy for over three centuries. In 1912, a modern central sugar processing factory was established near Basseterre, accompanied by the construction of a narrow-gauge railway network designed to bring harvested cane from outlying coastal plantations to the factory yard.

Completed in 1926, the railway operated during annual seasonal harvests (historically called “Crop”). Following the transition of the island’s economy away from industrial sugar processing, the railway company partnered with the Government of Saint Christopher and Nevis to launch heritage passenger excursions on January 28, 2003.

The passenger cars operating on the line are custom-designed double-deck units:

Route Highlights & Coastal Scenery

The railway route travels along the northeastern coastline of St. Kitts before circling inland toward the foothills of Mount Liamuiga:

1. Steel Canyon Bridges: The narrow-gauge train crosses tall steel bridges built over deep ravines (locally known as “ghuts”).
2. Historical Estate Ruins: The track passes old sugar estate grounds with stone windmills and masonry chimneys.
3. Mount Liamuiga Foothills: Passengers enjoy views of the volcanic cone of Mount Liamuiga rising above the railway corridor.
4. Coastal Communities: The route passes through rural northern settlements including Saddlers and St. Paul’s.
